SEMDEMS MEETING: THURSDAY, NOV. 10, 7 PM
Get in on the excitement of a new, powerful Seminole County Democratic Party
The SemDems will meet at our headquarters, 335 N. Ronald Reagan Blvd. (at the corner of Church) in downtown Longwood on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 pm. In addition to a celebration of our successful campaign to re-elect Mayor Pat Bates in Altamonte Springs, we will be honoring our veterans who served our country.
Veterans caucus member Vic Ogilve will give a brief presentation, followed by some question and answer time.
Seminole County Supervisor of Elections Mike Ertel will also be on hand at the beginning of the meeting to talk about Voter Registration and the new laws regarding the ways in which voter registration forms must be handled.

After the business is concluded, we'll have some snacks and - some of us might go across the street to Connelly's Irish Pub for a celebratory pint.

SEMINOLE DEMOCRATS HELP ALTAMONTE MAYOR PAT BATES WIN
Dems knock doors, stuff envelopes and make phone calls to make a difference in Altamonte race

Mayor Pat Bates of Altamonte Springs is the only Democratic mayor in Seminole County. In an election earlier this week, Bates was challenged by not only a Tallahassee lobbyist but the entire Republican Party at both the local and state level.
The other side was no match for the newly-energized Seminole Democrats who spent hundreds of hours calling voters, talking to them at the door and sending mail to the citizens of that city encouraging them to support the mayor who has been supporting them for one term (plus another decade on the city commission).

The UCF Democrats knocked doors and made phone calls which helped the campaign reach more voters.
Assistance from other local DECs in Orange, Brevard, Polk and Lake counties, which adopted precincts in Altamonte and made phone calls to voters, was crucial as well.
Seminole DEC chair Steve Barnes said the Seminole Democrats showed that "when you work, you win." He thanked those who gave up many hours to bring in the winning figures in the Altamonte Springs race, adding that the volunteer hours put in by the Seminole Democrats made all the difference.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR???

Because Dems don't come out in force to vote
we get representation like this...

The Orlando Sentinel caught Rep. Chris Dorworth texting, Facebooking, etc. on his Blackberry and iPad during the controversial redistricting hearings recently. He said he was "multi-tasking", but we deserve a representitive who cares enough to at least PRETEND to be interested in what his constituents have to say. Scott Maxwell submitted this video commentary:

As Democrats we have got to come together in 2012 to support caring candidates in all the races from local to statewide to national. We have to work together to elect people who represent us and take the time to really listen to what we have to say.

Press Conference condemning Congressman Mica's "Dirty Water Bill" Today

Thursday, July 21 · 11:00am - 12:00pm
Congressman John Mica's office
100 East Sybelia Avenue
Winter Park, FL

Florida statewide and national groups will hold a press conference outside Congressman John Mica’s office to criticize his “Dirty Water” bill, H.R. 2018 which passed the U.S. House of Representatives on July 13.
HR 2018 - if passed by the Senate and signed by President Obama - would severely restrict the Environmental Protection Agency from enforcing key parts of the Clean Water Act and would prevent the Environmental Protection Agency, without state concurrence, from taking action to revise outdated state water quality standards, making it easier for companies to dump their waste and garbage into lakes and rivers. The bill targets EPA’s recent intervention to regulate nitrogen and phosphorus levels in Florida’s waters.

Please join people  who care about the environment - like Frank Jackalone – Florida Staff Director, Sierra Club, Deirdre Macnab - President, League of Women Voters of Florida, Steve Murchie - Senior Regional Outreach Director, National Wildlife Federation, Karina Veaudry - Executive Director, Florida Native Plant Society, Alejandra Cabrera - Campaign Coordinator, Environment Florida, Steve Barnes - Former Supervisor, Seminole Cty. Soil & Water Conservation Dist., Marjory Holt - Conservation Chair, Central Florida Sierra Club, and Dr. Joseph Siry- Treasurer of Save the Manatee Club in voicing your displeasure with this bad legislation.

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King's life
...an inspiration to many

The Seminole County Democrats and the Seminole Black Caucus celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King on Saturday, April 9 in Memorial Park on Lake Monroe in Sanford. Old friends and new ones lit candles in the dimming afternoon light while talking about how Dr. King inspired their activism and how that inspiration will cntinue to move all of us forward through
these difficult times.

About two dozen people were on hand for this first time event in Seminole County. There is hope that this celebration will become an annual event.

SemDems: Having fun while getting things done

The Seminole Democrats met on March 24 at the party headquarters, 335 N. Ronald Reagan Blvd. in Longwood.

After a quick run through the agenda, we spent a while socializing and making plans for the future. There was plenty of food and the chance to make new fiends and catch up with others. The University of Central Florida Democrats took a few minutes to pose with Pres. Obama who stopped by to see what we are doing these days. (Actually, that's a great life-size cut out that has become a favorite photo opp at the office. Join us for our meetings - and soon, during regular business hours - and get your photo taken with the president too.)

Redisticting: Keep on top of this issue

If you're looking for a resource  for learning more about redistricting, this is one of the best we have found.
It may sound boring, but it is the most important thing that will take place in politics between now and Nov. 2012.
